This technique is used to create a crackle texture similar to tree bark. I have become interested in this fascinating method. Emmeline Butler is a Yorkshire-based ceramic artist who uses this technique in her work.
"My love of nature, the countryside and the beauty of its many textures has a great influence on my work. Cracked limestone pavements, tree bark, dry exposed peat, are reflected in the surface patterns of my work. I use a finely grogged clay which, although can be a bit rough to work with, gives a wonderful feel to the finished piece, and compliments the textures created on the outside." Emmeline Butler.
Today I visited her exhibition at the Mill Bridge Gallery in Skipton where I saw her most recent work, 'Moorland' which was interesting as this series of vessels seemed bolder both in texture and in colour.
Of course, I couldn't resist bringing one of her little babies home as her work is very affordable.
I would like to learn and experiment with this technique in the future.
