P.S. to Towneley’s Ancient Oak Blog

Steven Davis is a retired ecologist and conservationist. His interests lie in the dynamic ecological processes of growth, decline and decay exhibited by trees and the ecological niches that persist in the life (and death) of the tree. This cycle is a particular interest of mine. His photographs below are part of a visual exhibition “Earth Photo 2020” which was sponsored by The Royal Geographical Society and The Institute of British Geographers.

“Ancient Oaks are characterised by deeply fissured bark, broken limbs, splits, wounds and fractures, rot holes, bare branches and hollowed out trunks which tell of a grand history.” Davis, S.

The trees are not tall and straight but have short, squat trunks, illustrating the historic practice of pollarding.
