I have spent most of this semester working to capture in clay the essence of silver birch bark using test tiles in different types of clay, stoneware, porcelain, terracotta and red and white grogged clay. I have used various colours and techniques with slip to add colour and natural materials and tools to add texture. Where to go next?
I have been interested in and observing the repetition of forms in nature. Silver birches almost always grow in large or small forest-like groups. Discussing this during a tutorial with Dave and Rob was thought provoking and challenged me to be a little braver in my thinking. Perhaps the aspect of silver birches to focus on could be their collectivity and connectivity. Maybe it's time to explore this idea further and look towards a silver birch forest installation.
Much of my inspiration comes from time spent outdoors. My love of nature is often infused with a sense of Celtic myths and legends. Walking through a birch forest brings these legends closer.
