Lesley McInally completed a Bachelor of Design Hons degree in Ceramics and Printmaking at Dundee University followed by 8 years as a full-time ceramic artist producing functional and decorative ceramics for UK galleries. In 2004, she emigrated to Canada where she continued her studio practice in Cookstown, Ontario.
Since then, she has developed her unique style of stretched slab, hand-built paperclay sculptures and vessels with a rich depth of surface texture, incorporating her printmaking skills.
She builds up a layer at a time with coloured slips of various thicknesses onto the clay surface. She uses underglazes, ceramic chalks and stencils. She uses a monoprint technique, painting the ceramic pigment onto paper then transferring the results back onto the clay
surface, creating endless possibilities for patterns and textural variation.
