Final Blog of the MA in Ceramics

The course has been a journey of surprises. The fact that my work during the MA has been hand built has been a surprise! I joined the course as a thrower, intending to improve my throwing skills and my glazing knowledge, yet I have become a hand builder whose work is more suited to oxides than glazes.

The course was, of course, interrupted by Covid, and although we were kept busy at home with projects, once back in the workshop I found it difficult to pick up the threads of my pre-Covid project (which was to create an immersive silver birch installation).

I eventually abandoned this project and changed direction in the form of a series of landscape pieces, based on the Cliviger Gorge near my home in Lancashire. I have enjoyed exploring new ways of making, experimenting with new techniques and the use of surface decoration within this landscape series.

Throughout the course we have been well supported by our tutors, and our technician Cath, (who has gone the extra mile when required). The friendship and mutual support within our group of students has been an essential part of the experience for me, as has the support of my family, particularly with regard to the IT aspects of the course.
