Decay, Renewal - and Decoration?

Out of another 'dead' tree stump grows a large silver birch with exposed roots - one 'dead' tree giving rise to another, in this case also providing shelter for squirrels. On the bark of the living birch is a carved love heart and the stump of the dead tree has linear bark lines, into which passers by have pushed copper coins into. Is this vandalism by man towards nature or is it evidence of his/her innate creativity and urge to decorate as in the case of the Lascaux Caves in France?
