In Towneley woods is my special place, a fallen silver birch tree. I have observed the seasonal changes as the tree trunk and its bark gradually decay and sink back into the earth. Today I noticed the parts of the tree which evidence the violence of its fall - sharp cracks and tears in the wood which I intend to reflect in my project. There is something new. Increasing numbers of bracket fungus are appearing, as the the tree decays it gives rise to another life form.
In another part of the woods lies the stump and felled trunk of a much larger tree. Here again, beautiful new fungal growth is appearing, echoing the seasonal changes of decay and renewal.
